Termites

Termites are social insects that live in organized colonies, just like ants and bees. The most common species in Alicante, Valencia, Murcia and Albacete is the subterranean termite.

Worker termites are whitish in color, like white ants the size of a grain of rice. They do not let themselves be seen easily and if they do, it is already too late and it is because the damage has been created. They are the ones that cause attacks on the wood and are responsible for feeding the entire termite nest.

Soldier termites are similar to worker termites, but with larger and yellowish heads. They have strong jaws to defend the termite mound.

Winged termites are like black ants with wings. They fly out all at once and sometimes they are the ones that warn us that there is a termite problem at home. They are responsible for creating new termite mounds.

Termites do not live in wood. They make underground termite mounds, just like ants do. Therefore, we do not solve the termite problem by changing the affected wood. A termite mound can be quite far from its food source, up to 80 meters or more.

What types of termites are there in Spain?

En España existen tres especies de termitas que mencionamos a continuación. Pero ya tenemos una nueva especie invasora de termitas en las Islas Canarias, llamada Reticulitermes flavipes, originaria de USA.

Subterranean termites: Reticulitermes banyulensis and Reticulitermes grassei

The termites that we normally find at home are subterranean termites. They cause attacks and damage to built-in wood such as door frames, beams, built-in wardrobes, etc. They devour everything that has cellulose, attacking DM, cotton, cardboard and paper. They form very numerous termite mounds.

Drywood termite: Kalotermes flavicollis

This type of termite makes smaller termite mounds than the subterranean termite. Nests within the food source (wood) or very close. It normally attacks the dry parts of trees but can invade the exterior windows of the house and wooden skirting boards near the garden or balcony. It forms a characteristic granule that is released from its galleries to the outside.

Drywood termite: Cryptotermes brevis

This termite also forms a termite mound in the wood, on which it feeds. It can attack furniture and built-in wood. It is very successful when it comes to colonizing wood, so if you have a piece of furniture affected by this type of termite, it will invade all the wood within its reach.
